Makaiwa Bay is a small beach within the Mauna Lani Resort in Kohala Coast, Big Island of Hawaii. It is a well-known destination among beginner scuba divers and avid snorkelers. It features fine white sand and clear aquamarine waters. It is also the location of the 800 year old historic Makaiwa Bay Fish Pond.
A 3/4 mile path that leads to the beach from a roadside public parking lot. The paved path goes through a lava field and past ancient Hawaiian fish ponds that date back to 250 BC.
Apart from swimming, snorkeling and other water activities, the beach also offers spectacular views of the Kohala Coast and Maui. It is also a great spot for whale watching from December to March.
