The Maui Ocean Center is an aquarium and marine science center located in Maalaea, Hawaii on the island of Maui. The three acre (12,000 m²) facility, which opened on March 18, 1998, is the largest tropical reef aquarium in the Western Hemisphere. Its coral reef habitats features sea turtles, sharks, humpback whales and other amazing sea creatures.
The center also houses a collection of Hawaiian reef fish, corals, green turtles, sting rays in a series of well-designed aquariums. A breath-taking glass tunnel, which passes through a shark and ray tank, allows visitors to sit and contemplate the varied life around them.
It also provide educational displays explaining the life cycles of the humpback whales which migrate to Hawaii each December to March and how the Polynesians who settled in Hawaii used the sea.
There are stores on the grounds selling a range of gifts including original works of art of exceptional quality.
