Onekahakaha Beach Park, located in the town of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii, is known for its sand bottomed tide pools with calm waters. The pools were created by boulders that protects the beach from the ocean's violent waves.
The beach is a favorite among Hilo families, especially those with small children, as the shallow tide pools provide a safe area for swimming and playing for the young ones. The protected pools are great spots for snorkeling and for observing the local marine life. Be warned though that prickly sea urchins can also be present so always be careful where you step in the water.
Beyond the breakwater is a more dangerous area because of large waves and turbulent tidal surge. Only competent swimmers should venture into these parts.
The park also has a large grassy area and numerous trees providing shade from the sun. There are also picnic pavilions, rest rooms, and showers. Lifeguards are on duty during weekends, holidays, and summer only.
To get to Onekahakaha Beach Park, take King Kamehameha Road past Banyan Drive to Kanoelehua Street. Continue on Kalaniana'ole Street, approximately 4 miles along coast. Turn towards the beach and look for parking lot to the right.
